Everyone keeps asking about Issue 1 on the upcoming ballot.
This is the best explanation I've seen so far.

Looking at both sides,
FIRST....
a NO VOTE --- would continue the current simple majority requirement of 50%+1 votes to make a change to the Ohio constitution.
a YES VOTE--- would change that to require a supermajority to make a Constitutional change. 60% OF ALL OHIO VOTERS would decide any changes to the Ohio constitution.
A no vote sounds good on the surface, one person = one vote and the simple majority wins. However, on the flip side, the majority of voters from Cleveland, Columbus and, Cincinnati show up to vote on an issue; the rest of Ohio gets outweighed by sheer population density numbers and are stuck with what the 3 big cities want.
A yes vote would level that playing field for the rural areas of Ohio to actually have a voice that matters. To me, Constitutional changes should not be easy to make and swayed by the simple majority. It should take serious debate and reflect the opinion and ideals of the WHOLE state and not just the areas of the state where the population is the greatest.
SECOND

--a YES VOTE --- would change that to require signatures from ALL 88 counties in Ohio in order to get a Constitutional change on a ballot.
Have you ever gone voting, read a proposed issue and wondered, "where the hell did this come from?" Well, that's because your county was NOT involved in the collection of signatures for the issue to get on the ballot in the first place. Here's where the special interest groups get away with BS initiatives and Constitutional changes to get on the ballot. They'll only canvas for signatures in the 44 counties most favorable to their issue, leaving the other 44 Ohio counties in the dark!!! And, yes, this applies to both sides of the aisle!!
To me, a YES vote would actually increase informed voting. ALL voters in Ohio would actually get the chance to be aware of upcoming ballot initiatives and be able to really question what the proposed initiative is all about.
Keep this in mind: 50 of Ohio's 88 counties are considered RURAL (U.S. Census 2020)!!! That means 62.5% OF OHIO IS RURAL!!!! I think it's time for rural Ohio votes to actually matter when it comes to changing the Ohio Constitution.
Our Founding Fathers intended to make it hard to amend the Constitution: that's why, at the federal level, it takes a two-thirds vote of both houses of Congress and three-fourths of the states to amend the US Constitution.
Not a 51% majority.

Recent polling suggests support for Issue 1 is growing but still very close.
We've been doing all we can to educate gun owners, but now it's crunch time and we need to make one final push before Election Day on August 8.
We're sending a mailer to thousands of Ohioans to get out the vote in favor of Issue 1 to protect our constitution and our gun rights.
We can win, but only if people understand what is at stake. So here it is:
Over a century ago, progressives inserted a loophole into Ohio’s Constitution to allow changes to be made with no statewide consensus. Now deep-pocket, out-of-state billionaires and radical groups can buy their way onto the ballot and attack our basic rights even if half the state disagrees!
The same people who always oppose your gun rights oppose Issue 1. That’s because they have plans to use our state constitution to end-run the legislature and jam gun control down your throat.
Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and other cities have tried to enact gun control laws for years. And we’ve fought them at every step. The difference now is, they want to bypass the legislature, outflank the state’s preemption laws, and jam gun control into the constitution.
Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb recently admitted that if Issue 1 fails and Ohio’s Constitution continues to be easy to amend, they will use a ballot initiative to come after your guns.
If they’re able to do that, say goodbye to your gun rights. And say goodbye to your hunting and sportsman rights as well.
That’s why Buckeye Firearms Association supports Issue 1 to bring Ohio into line with 78% of other states that wisely make it harder to amend their constitutions - and that even includes liberal states like New York, Washington, and New Hampshire.
Issue 1 would allow residents of every county to have a say (instead of just half), and would require 60% of voters to approve (instead of 50% plus 1) before making any change to the Ohio Constitution.
Consider this: California frequently changes their constitution - over 500 times since the 1870s. How’s that working out?
